‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Deleted Scenes: Star Lord's Grandfather, Karen Gillan Scenes Cut To Retain Movie's Fun Energy
"Guardians of the Galaxy" was a worldwide hit despite having Chris Pratt, a then relatively unknown actor, portraying the lead role of Star Lord. However, some scenes that were previously included in the promotional videos didn't make it to the theatrical release, neither in the upcoming blu-ray/dvd copy. In an interview, director James Gunn expounded on some of these scenes including Karen Gillan's and the movie's sad ending involving Peter Quills grandfather.
The ending of "Guardians of the Galaxy" saw Star Lord's abductor Yondu laughing when he realised Star Lord had given a fake Infinity Gem. However, a recent interview with director James Gunn revealed a sad ending for the movie.
Slashfilm quoted the director on his revelation that Grandpa Quill's scene at the end of the movie was deleted. While Marvin Gaye's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" plays Star Lord's aged grandfather was supposed to end the movie, knowing that his grandson was abducted by aliens. However, Gunn worried that viewers wouldn't recognise that it was him from the beginning of the movie so his scene was evidently cut.
"He has this photograph of Meredith (Peter Quill's mother) and Peter as a little boy and he looks up at the stars and we go up to the stars and it was really sweet. It means that he must have seen Quill getting abducted at the end of that day and is still waiting for him to return but it was freaking sad so we took it out," Gunn said.
Gunn revealed few more scenes were deleted from "Guardians of the Galaxy" to keep the movie's fun energy until the end. Benecio del Toro's The Collector and Karen Gillan's Nebula were among them. Even though Gunn claimed Nebula was his favorite among the characters he still ended up cutting her scene. The character's disposition of always being "pissed off" doesn't particularly call for a fun energy.
According to Cinemablend, James Gunn wanted "Guardians of the Galaxy" to end with the "the good team." That's why Yondu made it to the final scene. Peter Quill's abductor may have been a pest but he "did fight on the good guys' side," thus Gunn decided against deleting his scene.
