'The Guilty': Jake Gyllenhaal Talks About Feeling 'Trapped' During Filming
Jake Gyllenhaal opened up about his upcoming movie "The Guilty" and how he felt "trapped" while filming the mystery movie.
Gyllenhaal noted that the major part of the movie was shot on Zoom calls. He further noted how he used to hear other actors delivering their lines through the online video teleconferencing program.
"It was 20 pages a day shooting 20-30 minute takes," the 40-year-old actor told The Wrap at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday. "And I thrive in that space, but I was trapped in a chair. Antoine trapped me in a chair. Every time I wanted to move."
"I’m a very physical person, a very full-bodied actor, and to only be in a chair and having to express ended up doing a number on me as we got farther and farther into the story," the actor explained.
"Stillness is one thing, but then being trapped is another thing, and it brought out a lot of feelings in me and reveals a lot about this character too," he added.
The actor further revealed that the director of the movie, Antoine Fuqua, was able to see other actors on his screen but Gyllenhaal had an option to only hear them. Moreover, the "Brokeback Mountain" star explained it was challenging for all the actors to find the rhythm to act on Zoom.
The official Twitter handle of The Wrap shared a glimpse of the interview Monday.
The actor revealed there were three cameras filming them. "Over the course of 11 days, the cameras that are shooting you start getting closer and closer and closer to your face," he explained.
Gyllenhaal noted how the actors were supposed to start their lines even before the other actor had finished their lines because "We were not going to hear the end of the line, but knowing that it would be recorded as if we were going to be interrupted…It was like you were in a partial gravity room trying to keep your feet on the ground."
In the movie, Gyllenhaal portrayed a 911 call operator who tries to save a caller's life. The movie is slated to release on Oct. 1 on Netflix.
Besides "The Guilty," Gyllenhaal will be seen in another mystery movie titled, "Ambulance," which is slated to release on Feb. 17, 2022.
