The Guinness World Records congratulates marathoner, American Gladys Burril for her recent record recognition as the 'Oldest Female to Complete a Marathon' aged 92 years, 19 days.

Burrill completed the 26.2 mile Honolulu Marathon race in 9 hours 53 minutes and 16 seconds, on December 12th, 2010.

Formerly a multi-engine pilot, mountain climber, desert hiker and snowshoer, Burrill began her marathoning in Honolulu at age 86. She successfully fast-walked her first four Honolulu Marathons to completion but failed at ages 90 and 91 to finish.

Her training consists of a weekly routine in which she walks 40-50 miles, but she attributes her success to positive thinking. Nicknamed "the Glady-ator" she reflects on her remarkable endurance by stating that "age is just number."

Burrill was born on Nov. 23, 1918 in La Center Washington. She is a resident of Prospect, Oregon, but spends most of her time in Waikiki Beach where she owns a condo.

Guinness World Records' Head of the US Records Management Team, Carlos Martinez, commented "Gladys' recent record is one of the most inspiring achievements we've documented, motivating athletes of all ages to get out and compete."

This was Burril's fifth marathon venture in seven years.

Burril beat out previous title holder, Jenny Wood-Allen (b.1911) from Dundee, who completed the 2002 London Marathon at age 90 years 145 days in 11 hours 34 minutes on April 14, 2002.

The oldest man to complete a 26-mile marathon was Greek runner Dimitrion Yordanidis, in Athens, Greece in 1976. At age 98, he finished in 7 hr 33 min.
