Guns 'N Roses, Joan Jett, The Cure Lead 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominations [PHOTOS]
The bands and artists up for spots next year at the the Rock and Roll hall of fame have been announced.
Each year, a handful of nominees are selected to be inducted to the Rock and Roll hall of fame, and hair-raising rockers Guns 'N Roses are up for this year's win. Guns 'N Roses, lead by vocalist Axl Rose and guitarist Slash, quickly became a rock phenomenon after their debut record entitled "Appetite for Destruction." Appetite for Destruction (released in 1985) has sold nearly 28 million copies in the US alone and is currently the highest selling debut album in the country of all time. The band has released six albums in their run, including the ironically-titled "Chinese Democracy" which was released in 2008.
Another band nominated for next year's coveted spots is Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, whose song "I Love Rock and Roll" remains as one of the biggest tracks 30 years after its release. Lead by Joan Jett, who first penetrated the music scene with the all-girl band "The Runaways," the Black Hearts is composed of Ricky Byrd, bassist Gary Ryan, and drummer Danny O'Brien. "I Love Rock and Roll" is currently sitting at the number 56 spot in Billboard's "Best Rock Songs of All Time" List.
Another contender for the title is the goth glam institution The Cure, whose songs attracted a new wave of listeners and emotional music fans. Formed in West Sussex, England in 1976, the band is lead by its only constant member Robert Smith. The band's debut single, "Killing an Arab," gained both negative and positive reviews because of its sheer potential and lewd title. 13 albums and countless awards later, The Cure remains one of the most celebrated bands today.
In order to be nominated for the Rock and Roll hall of fame, an artist or a band must have released a debut single 25 years ago to qualify for the induction. More than 500 voters will determine this year's winners, which will be announced (and inducted) on April 14 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
