Hacking Group Anonymous Vows Attacks on Paedophilia Sites
The infamous hacking group, Anonymous, has found another worthy cause by declaring cyber war with Web sites known to process exchanges of child pornography, a report by tech news site ZDNet said on Tuesday.
The hacker-activist group announced over the weekend through file sharing site Pastebin that it intends to bring down sites that facilitate the sharing of images depicting the exploitation of young children.
"Lately, there has been a surge of websites dedicated to paedophiles for chat, picture sharing, etc ... This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated," ZDNet quoted Anonymous' web statement as saying.
"For the good of our followers, for the good of mankind, and for our own enjoyment we shall expel from the internet and systematically destroy any such boards that continue to operate," the group vowed in making known its new mission.
Anonymous hit the news in 2011 for its high-profile breaches on popular and government sites that exposed the vulnerability of their security protocols.
The group has anchored its actions on a quest to keep censorship out of the World Wide Web, which was highlighted by the perceived persecution by the U.S. government against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who leaked voluminous documents last year detailing the diplomatic dealings of Washington.
This time around, Anonymous aims to pour its energy on what appears as a more popular battle and it enjoins the public to join or support the fight.
"You are Anonymous as well ... Spread the word to fellow Anons, to the press, and encourage them to do the same. Those that can attack are asked to fire their lazors ... those that cannot are encouraged to learn," the group's statement said.
According to ZDNet, Anonymous called its new mission as 'Operation Pedo Chat', calling more attention to the operation via Twitter by using the hashtag #OpPedoChat.
"We, Anonymous, aim to diminish if not eradicate this plague from the internet," the hacking group said.
ZDNet noted too that as of this week, Anonymous' new hacking operation has attracted positive replies from France, Germany, Greece and Ireland, with translations of the noble mission already circulating in those areas.
The latest number of porn sites that attracted the attention of Anonymous, ZDNet said, amounted to 85 so far, which were taken down by the group with most of them remaining offline as of press time.
Targeting porn sites is not new to Anonymous as it attacked 40 paedophilia sites October last year and exposed personal details of 1,500 paedophiles that the group said were patronising the Web sites.
