The Harry Potter movies will be recognized in the upcoming BAFTA award, Britain’s counterpart of the United States’ Oscars Academy Award. Organizers has made the announcement Thursday, saying the series will be awarded for its contribution to cinema.

According to Reuters, the award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema will be presented to J.K Rowling, the best-selling author of the original wizard stories. With Rowling, added Reuters, is the series producer, David Heyman and they are both expected to receive the award during the main BAFTA prize ceremony in London on February 13.

"The Harry Potter films have not only created stars in front of the camera, but have also highlighted the expertise within the British craft and technical industries, supporting a vast array of jobs throughout production," BAFTA was quoted as saying in a statement, according to Reuters.

Upon receiving the award in a less formal event held in London, the series producer, Heyman has thousands of film staff and personnel to represent when he thanked BAFTA organizers for the recognition.

“On behalf of the over 2,000 people who worked in front of and behind the camera on each of the Harry Potter films I would like to say how honored we all are to receive this Award,” Heyman said, according to Reuters.

The Potter films producer was also quick to recognize the book’s author, from which the films was adapted form. Heyman said, "And thank you to Jo Rowling for entrusting us to bring her magnificent books to the screen."

When they put them on screen, the Potter series have received nominations in technical or musical categories for several Oscars after it has stormed the cinema with its first sequel in early 2000. But the Reuters noted that the Potter series has yet to bring home a golden statuette.

Quoting the ticket tracking site www.boxofficemojo.com., Reuters said that the first seven Harry Potter films have accumulated an estimated $6.4 billion earnings at the box office not only in the US and British theatres but also in many countries in the world.

Excluded in the reported earnings is the final installment of the Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2". The second part of the last series will be released on theaters on July 15.

Despite its performance at the box office, some film cast members and definitely most of Harry Potter fans have expressed their earlier sentiment, asking why the series have been ‘overlooked’ in major award giving bodies for more major acting categories particularly in acting and directing.
