'Harry Potter' Spin-off Update: ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ taps Jon Voight, Gemma Chan, Carmen Ejogo
Three more actors are set to the join the cast of the "Harry Potter" spin-off, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
Veteran and Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight is joining the ensemble cast along with Gemma Chan and Carmen Ejogo, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Unfortunately, the details about their respective roles have not been disclosed.
Eddie Redmayne, the Academy's reigning Best Actor for "The Theory of Everything," and Katherine Waterson have already been confirmed to headline the spin-off. And the stellar supporting cast include Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton and Dan Fogler.
David Yates, the filmmaker who helmed the four "Harry Potter" films, is back on the director’s seat. He is directing the film based on the screenplay penned by J.K. Rowling herself.
The events of the new film takes place 70 years before Harry Potter reads the “Fantastic Beasts” textbook written by Newt Scamander, the character played by Redmayne. The film follows Scamander’s quest to find and document magical creatures before becoming the world’s pre-eminent magizoologist in the fictional world of witchcraft and wizardry.
Waterson’s character, on the other hand, is distantly related to Anthony Goldstein, a Ravenclaw student in the "Harry Potter" series, and she meets Redmayne’s character when the latter travels to New York.
Earlier this year, J.K. Rowling clarified that the script for the "Fantastic Beasts" project will neither be a prequel nor a sequel to Harry’s story, although it will be set in the same world as the book series.
The production on the film is already underway. It is currently shooting at the Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K, and it is slated to hit the theatres in November 2016.
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them" is based on a 2001 book of the same name written by J.K.Rowling, which was published under a pseudonym -- the fictional character of Newt Scamander. The book is about 85 magical creatures found in the "Harry Potter" universe. It purports to be a reproduction of a textbook owned by Harry as mentioned in the first installment of the "Harry Potter" series.
