'The Heat' Review: Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy Work It, Not a Chick Flick [PHOTOS]
The 2013 comedy "The Heat" starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy is beating "White House Down" in reviews and ticket sales. If you could use a good laugh out loud movie, this is the one you see.
In The Heat, Sandra Bullock plays an FBI agent again, but she's not entirely Miss Congeniality Gracie Hart this time around. She's still very much Ms 'Lonely Nice Girl,' though. Melissa McCarthy also channels a little bit of her mad Megan character from Bridesmaids, and pulls her character through despite a relatively weaker script. So if you haven't seen the film's trailer (and you're recommended to skip those), just imagine a Gracie-meets-Megan story and put them together as law enforcers.
The official "The Heat" synopsis reads:
Uptight FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) and foul-mouthed Boston cop Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) couldn't be more incompatible. But when they join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies.
There is nothing much to say on the film's plot, except it would have certainly failed in the skills of less-experienced comedic talents. But with Bullock and McCarthy being great in timing and chemistry, viewers leave the theatres feeling satisfied. In fact, the movie continues to be a hit, thanks to word of mouth. Those who somehow failed to see any film trailers are the luckier ones, because most if not all the best parts were there already.
Katie Dippold wrote The Heat's screenplay, which seems to have been the least of the elements that made the movie work, unfortunately. McCarthy is way up there in dishing out the funny; she somewhat schooled (and completely entertained) Bullock at number two.
The Heat got a 61% Tomatometer critics rating, and 78% liked it on Rotten Tomatoes. IMDB's rating from nearly 4 thousand viewers is a solid 7.0.
Watch The Heat with your friends, watch it with your SOs. This is not your typical chick flick, so if your girl wants to see it, don't be so unnecessarily overburdened. And if you must watch White House Down, see it first before this comedy. Here are some of the film shout-outs we've rounded up on Twitter.
