Henry Cavill seemingly confirms Superman exit
Henry Cavill may be done playing Superman. After reports suggested that the actor will not be reprising his famous superhero role anymore, the actor posted a cryptic video that seemingly confirms that he is done playing this character and is moving on to different roles.
The post on Instagram seems normal enough at first [see below]. “Today was exciting #Superman,” Cavill wrote in the post. The video, however, is very cryptic. It shows the actor with a serious face, wearing a "Krypton Lifting Team" t-shirt.
“The Blue Danube” waltz sung by Barking Dogs plays in the background, as Cavill slowly shows a Superman action figure, and later takes it out of sight. The video in itself won’t make sense without some context.
According to a report by TheHollywoodReporter, Cavill has parted ways with Warner Bros. after contract talks between his representatives and the studio broke down for a cameo appearance in the “Shazam” film.
The consequences of this is that the studio is shifting focus on other superheroes. An upcoming film about Supergirl is reportedly an origin story set in a time when Superman was still a child, which means Cavill won’t get a chance to reprise his role in it.
"We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films," read a statement from a Warner Bros. spokesperson.
The report further adds that Warner Bros. doesn’t have any plans of making another “Superman” movie for the next few years. When they do start planning to bring back the character, it will be another actor’s turn to don the cape.
"Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors," a source in Warner Bros. reportedly said. An official announcement, however, is yet to be made.
