"The Hobbit" 2 or "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues its strong performance at the box office despite new movies being released. The movie is estimated to have made more than $400 million worldwide.

According to a report by Box Office Mojo, "The Hobbit" 2 has made over $127 million in the U.S market and has collected over $276 million in the international market, making the estimated collection just over $400 million for the film.

The film opened to a strong box office response, collecting over $73 million in the U.S market on the opening weekend between Dec 13 and 15. The movie saw a total collection of over $205 million worldwide during the opening weekend.

The collections come in despite the release of the new movie "Anchorman" 2. With the relative success of the first "Anchorman" movie and with other comedy movies doing well at the box office, the sales of "The Hobbit" 2 were expected to be affected.

"The Hobbit" 2 takes the viewers on a continued journey of Gandalf, the dwarfs and a Hobbit called Bilbo to reclaim the mountain of the dwarfs taken over by a dragon. They are on a quest to get the Arkenstone to unite and call upon all the dwarf armies to kill the dragon and reclaim their homeland.

Viewers will be able to see the dragon for the first time in "The Hobbit" 2 or "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." In the first movie, viewers were only able to see the shadow of the dragon and the devastation the dragon left behind.

The cast of the movie includes Ian McKelly as Gandalf, Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Richard Armitage as Thorin, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel, Lee Pace as Thranduil, Luke Evans as Bard and Girion, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug the dragon and the voice of the Necromancer.

The release date in Australia is set to be Dec 26, 2013. The movie is expected to continue its strong performance at the box office and see more collection during the Christmas holidays.

"The Hobbit" 2 movie will have to compete with the upcoming movies like "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." Both the upcoming movies come with strong expectations at the box office.
