"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" reportedly earned a whopping $5.5 Million on its Australian Boxing Day opening on Dec. 26, 2013. The actual box office gross of :The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" is $5.465 million. It is the second installment of "The Hobbit" films directed by Peter Jackson, who also directed "The Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) films ("The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King") from 2001-2003.

According to Deadline.com, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" has already grossed $127,455,000 worldwide and $96,000,000 internationally as of the weekend ending Dec. 22, 2013.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" stars Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Benedict Cumberbatch (Smaug / Necromancer), Cate Blanchett(Galadriel), Luke Evans (Bard/Girion), Lee Pace (Thranduil), Aidan Turner (Kili), Mikael Persbrandt (Beorn) and Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel).

Even though the film scored big in the Australian box office when it opened on Boxing Day, it still didn't surpass the success of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in 2012. According to NewsMail, the first installment of "The Hobbit" films earned $5.925 million on its 2012 Boxing Day release in Australia. It is still considered as the biggest Boxing Day opening of all time in Australia. "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" holds the second spot. Deadline.com also reports that it is the biggest Thursday opening in Australia.

Disney's "Frozen" failed to beat "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." It ended up being the top 2 film on Boxing Day. It grossed $1.648 million. Meanwhile, the third film to round up the Top 3 films on Boxing Day is "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," starring Ben Stiller. It grossed $860,000.

In New Zealand, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" was shown earlier than Australia on Dec. 12, 2013. It had a four-day gross of $1.85 million and was shown in 201 screens.

Deadline.com also states that the worldwide cume of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" has now reached over $430M, including mid-week and Christmas Day domestic estimates. Warner Bros. studio expects that this sequel will ultimately gross very close to "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which had a total international cume of $714.M.
