'The Hobbit' Reigns the AU Box Office, 'Frozen' Skates to Second
"The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" and "Frozen" debut at the Australia box office in the first and second places respectively.
The second installment of "The Hobbit" series lands at the top spot of the Australia box office records ever since it premiered on Boxing Day, Dec. 26. The movie, which stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellan and Orlando Bloom, earned more than $19 million from its premiere date all the way through New Year's Day, Jan. 1.
On to second place is Disney's "Frozen," which also premiered on Boxing Day. The animated film, which features the voices of Kirsten Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, took home more than nine million dollars during the same period.
Three more movies which premiered on Boxing Day also made it to the top ten movies in this week's box office records. These are: "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (#4 and earning $4.4 million), "The Railway Man" (#7 and earning $1.9 million) and "Philomena" (#5 and earning $2.6 million).
Last week's top two movies, "Anchorman 2" and "American Hustle," slid down to the third and sixth spot in this week's box office charts. The two movies earned $4.6 million and $2.5 million respectively during the holiday week.
Rounding up the top ten movies movies of the holiday week are "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" (#8 and earning $1.6 million), "Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs 2" (#9 and raking in $1.4 million) and "Dhoom 3" (#10 and earning $443,000).
On the other side of the planet, "Frozen" is still amassing success even after seven weeks since it premiered on Thanksgiving. It earned US$20.7 during the first week of 2014, and grossing a total of $297.8 million since its premiere.
Meanwhile, the latest installment of the "Paranormal Activity" series premiered at second place and making US$18.2 million. "The Hobbit," on the other hand, lands at the third spot and earns US$16.3 million.
