"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" was the most pirated film of 2013. Other box office hits like "Iron Man 3" and "Fast and Furious 6" were also listed on the most pirated films list.

Movie "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" was downloaded eight million times and topped the list of most-shared movies on BitTorrent in 2013. "Django Unchained" and "Fast and Furious 6" were listed as number two and three, respectively.

TorrentFreak released the list.

The website mentioned that like every year, this year too many notable films could not make it on the list. Films like "Man of Steel" and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," were missing this year.

Gangster Squad was a very big surprise as the film grossed only $105,200,903 worldwide, least of all the big movies of 2013.

This list also points out that online piracy is prevalent no matter how many times the authorities try to curb it. The films that are not available for download or streaming due to delay in the release are pirated.

It is not known if the pirated downloads of movies threaten the box office collection. According to a post on TorrentFreak, researchers have no clear evidence that BitTorrent piracy and downloads hurt the box office revenues in U.S.

However, the DVD sales, on-demand services and rentals would be affected due to online piracy.

Check out the top ten most pirated films in 2013 compiled by TorrentFreak. The movies downloaded from January 1, 2013 to mid-December are counted. Also, data from cyberlocker downloads and online streaming is not included.
