Business over coffee, lunch and even dinner is a long standing practice. Although once the prerogative of CEO's and corporate high flyers, the practice is now much more common. The meal time meeting can prove to be very productive if you consider our five simple strategies.

Tip 1 Structured not social

Whether conducting business development or advancing business relationships, meetings need to produce effective outcomes to have benefit. A meeting structure, calmly managed, will help you have a successful meeting rather than a social catch up.

Tip 2 Flawless first impression

If it's an important meeting and you are the host; make contact with the venue beforehand. Introduce yourself, explain the importance of your meeting and establish a relationship that will serve you well on the day.

Tip 3 Dine for advantage

Try and suggest a meeting time and format that best serves your purpose. Sometimes an early breakfast is better than a long lunch. Whether dining out or dining at the office, the time of day and duration of the meeting should always be decided 'on purpose'.

Tip 4 Note the notable

The important points of a meeting can easily be lost in a fantastic fettuccini. Don't be embarrassed to take some notes to capture the critical points. If your lunch is quite formal (remember tip 3!) and you need to take notes, complete this process immediately following the meeting.

Tip 5 Maintain your focus

No... not the calories, the cost and the clock! Maintain your focus on the other guests and actively engage people in conversation beyond the meeting agenda. This will build rapport and encourage people to share their thoughts honestly and openly.
