House Series Finale Review: Everybody Dies… Eventually
Fox's celebrated medical drama, House M.D., has taken a bow in U.S. television on Monday night after eight seasons on air.
Meanwhile, in Australia, House fans might not see the series again on Saturday. Channel Ten is reportedly either airing a movie or a Bikie Wars rerun, as what happened a week ago. Aussie viewers are still ten episodes away from the series finale.
Spoilers were not released by the series' cast and crew. It worked well because there was no way to give a hint about the finale without ruining it entirely.
The first hour of the series finale is called, "Swan Song." For solid fans, this could be an emotional journey back to 177 episodes of the series. This special features behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast and crew. The second hour, "Everybody Dies," is the very last episode of the series.
Spoiler Alert
Who dies in the series finale of House MD? This is the time to stop reading if you want a satisfying finale experience.
The last act of the finale would remind the audience of the Warner Bros. film, Bucket List. It was bittersweet, just like what creator David Shore had said in a recent interview.
The typical point of looking for spoilers is to find out whether cancer patient Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) and/or self-sabotaging Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) will die in the finale.
Well, House lives. Wilson lives. But the audience knows they will die, eventually. The finale was almost bordering on sappy, but then the viewing experience might be different for those who have not seen all the past 177 episodes of the series.
There is something in the friendship of Wilson and House that is just too special, even for the skeptics.
For one, House has taught Wilson to forget all about social contracts and enjoy freedom in how they deal with each other. No need for lip service, polite words or even expression of gratitude. Most important, in sickness and in health, there will be no leaving anyone, either. To see how it all begins to end is quite poignant and yet satisfying.
House, M.D. The Movie?
The series may have seen a steady drop in ratings after it peaked too soon. But it cannot be denied that House M.D. has a strong international following, thanks to Laurie's and Leonard's brilliant acting skills. It may not be too overoptimistic to hope for a film version of this show, although there has been no official announcement about it yet.
For now, the fans could just take in the television finale, and enjoy the medical drama's highlights the past eight years.
