She’s a’ prostitute and he’s a murderer and the two protagonists in Amiel Courtin-Wilson and Michael Cody’s film called Ruin found love on the road as they make their way to a big win at the Venice International Film Festival Awards 2013.

Described by film and arts writer Stephanie Bunbury as “surreal and meditative road love story,” Ruin follows the journey of “the two actors, Sang Malen and Rous Mony [who] play a couple of misfits: she is a prostitute who rebels against her pimp's dominance; he is a factory worker tired of being treated like dirt,” noted The Age.

Filled with “sumptuous images that can be read as dreams or symbols more easily than as a real-world narrative” and which are highly intensified by “a dense electronic score,” the low-budgeted film was shot in Cambodia in an effort to provide representations of the country’s social problems.

A product of hard work and dedication and a collaboration of 17 Australians and some local Khmer-speaking actors, the film hopes to find its captive and much-deserved audience for a simple story created and told “with absolute passion.”

Some of the members of the film crew even bought their own tickets to partake in the Australian new arty film.

Their dedication and beliefs in the project may be considered to have paid off with the mix reactions received by the film.

Don Groves of if.com.au noted these reactions in toto.

Taking note of film critic Stephanie Bunbury, Groves pointed out the commitment poured in to the film.

Stephanie Bunbury said: “The film may have a small audience, but it's an intensely committed one,” adding that “she noted there were a number of walk-outs and there were negative responses from trade magazine critics.”

Director Cody’s spirits have never been hampered by the walk-outs.

"Our feedback has actually been universally positive. There were a few walk-outs but I'm yet to go to a screening that hasn't (and who knows why? People have places to be). There's no doubt there's a great buzz on the film here,” Cody was quoted as telling by if.com.au.

The technical aspects of the film dominate and super cede the minor setbacks.

"Visuals, mood and feeling absolutely sensational," IF said, quoting Themistoklis Giokroussis following the Lido screening. "A big thanks to all involved; I hope the film finds its deserved audience."

The film succeeded capturing the experts at the Venice Film Festival, particularly the cutting edge Horizon section. The film directors, Amiel Courtin-Wilson and Michael Cody, and its cinematographer, Ari Wegner, were awarded the elusive award on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the festival’s Horizon’s section is headed by American director and screen-writer Paul Schrader. Courtin-Wilson and Cody has Ruin as their second film to be successfully featured in the elite film festival. Their first project, Hail received the same positive review from critics and filmmakers alike.
