How Bass and Heavy Music can Make you Feel Powerful
Music is not just a relaxing hobby but is something that can make you feel good and empowered. A new research by the Kellogg School of Management at North Western University in Illinois has found that bass music can make the people feel powerful. Music clips of 30 seconds of duration of different types of music such as reggae, hip-hop, bass and heavy metal were played and the effect the music had on the listeners were analysed.
It was observed that those who listened to music of higher bass levels felt more empowered and confident. In the word completion task that followed the research team found that the listeners of bass music chose to convey their feelings using words related to power. Songs that were rated as the most powerful included "We Will Rock You" by Queen and "Get Ready for This" by 2 Unlimited. Songs like "Because We Can" by Fatboy Slim and "Who Let the Dogs Out" by Baha Men were found to be the least effective in making the listeners feel empowered.
Listening to your favourite tunes and bass music can make you feel good and confident and it might be a good idea to pump up the favourite music before an interview or a client meeting to ensure the best performance. If you are at a gym or going on a run, plugging on the earphones for some pumping fast numbers and music with heavy bass can give you a high and make you feel empowered and confident.
The research team of Dennis Hsu and his colleagues took up this innovative topic for research, inspired by the behavioural changes of sportsmen in major sporting events. They noticed that sports personnel often listened to music in the locker room and in the stadium.
"The ways these athletes immerse themselves in the music - some with their eyes steely shut and some gently nodded along the beats - seem as if the music is mentally preparing and toughening them up for the competition about to occur," says Hsu obtained via Medical News Today.
So next time when you are finding it hard to get out of the bed for an early morning workout, plug in some heavy bass music and see the difference it makes.
