Divorce, has for some reason, found its way into the homes and hearts of married couples. In fact, statistics show that just in United States, 50% of all marriages end up in divorce.

With this staggering high percentage, researchers at the National Center for Family and Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University have conducted a study to see what the divorce rates are when it comes to some factors such as ethnicity and education.

The study, led by Wendy Manning and Susan Brown, was gathered by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010, when the rate of first divorce was 17.5 per 1,000 women at the age of 18 years and older in their first marriage.

In their findings, the rate of first divorce was highest for the women who received some education after high school, but not earned a bachelor's degree - 23 per 1,000. Interestingly, data shows that women who had no high school diploma and those who have a college degree have the lowest rates of first divorce, 14.4 and 14.2 per 1,000, respectively.

When it comes to race and ethnicity, Asian women were found to have the lowest first divorce rate at 10 per 1,000 in a first marriage. Divorce rates of white and Hispanic women were close at 16.3 and 18.1, respectively. The African-American women have the highest rates of first divorce with 30.4 divorces per 1,000 women.

Causes and How to Avoid it

According to other researches done, divorce is often caused by several factors.

Lack of communication tops the list when it comes to reasons behind divorce. Discussion of the couple's expectation before getting married is also an important thing that couples should remember. And unfortunately, people who came from divorced homes show that there is a high likelihood of getting divorced themselves.

However, there are simple things that couples can do to avoid divorce. Basic things such as doing things together, making time for one another, and complimenting each other can make big strides to avoid splitting up. However, experts also suggest that spending time apart for individual interests is also healthy.
