‘How I Met Your Dad’ Turned Down by CBS, HIMYM Spinoff Shopping for New Network
"How I Met Your Mother" spinoff "How I Met Your Dad" is currently looking for another network after it failed to be included in CBS 2014-2015 lineup. The network confirmed Wednesday that the 20th Century Fox Television pilot is not joining its list of series due to some "elements on the pilot that didn't work out."
"We tried to work out about redoing the pilot. That's not happening right now," says CBS President of Entertainment Nina Tassler in an interview with Hollywood Reporter. "Sometimes you run into these kind of issues and you hope they can resolve themselves in that time frame."
Just like what happened in "The Big Bang Theory" and "Number," CBS wanted to redo the pilot but according to Tassler it's not going to happen anytime soon. According to sources, the studio and producers of the HIMYM spinoff wanted a series order commitment if the network wants then to reshoot the pilot. But unfortunately, that didn't happen.
"I'm heartsick; we loved this brand and we love the producers but it didn't work out," Tassler added and said that "re-piloting was in the best interest of protecting the creative elements of the show."
Instead of "How I Met Your Dad," CBS will launch a new comedy in the fall, "The McCarthys," and will retool newly ordered comedy "The Odd Couple" that stars "Friends" Matthew Perry. These are the two comedies of the network for the 2014-2015 season, a modest selection after ordering six comedy series last year.
Now that CBS is backing down to support HIMYD, "How I Met Your Dad" showrunners Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Emily Spivey are shopping for new network. According to Buzzfeed's source, other networks already expressed interest but did not disclosed the HIMYM spinoff might land. Some speculations that the new comedy series will find a possible home in Fox, FX and FXX.
The HIMYM spinoff pilot episode stars Greta Gerwig as Sally, Ted's female version, featuring voiceover from Meg Ryan following the role of Bob Saget in the original series. The show is the second spinoff that the broadcast network passed over this year, the first one is CW's "Supernatural" spinoff, "Supernatural: Bloodlines."
