How I Met Your Mother Season 8 finale could have scenes in Rome and New York to mark the end of an era. In fan sites and forum sites, many viewers have shared their speculation that Lily and Marshall are indeed Rome-bound. The speculation was sparked by the sitcom's most recent episode, Romeward Bound.

(Spoiler Alert: This feature contains major spoilers for those who have not seen HIMYM Episode 21.)

How I Met Your Mother showed Marshall enjoying a dreamy walk at Little Italy in New York in Episode 21. Towards the end of the episode, he and Lily have decided to accept the captain's Rome-based job offer. HIMYM production does not necessarily have to shoot in Rome, but the show could fly to Italy for Season 9.

At the HIMYM Season 8 premiere, we saw Ted at the Farhampton train station without Lily and Marshall. Why is the original trio not together? That the married couple flies to Rome after the wedding is a possibility.

How I Met Your Mother, through Ted Mosby, often tells the story in there-are-no-coincidences manner. We can imagine Ted telling his kids: "If I hadn't dated Zooey, Lily would not have met the Captain. If Robin and Barney had not gotten married (or tried to get married), I wouldn't have met your mother. If Lily and Marshall had not gotten married, I wouldn't have been at Farhampton with your mother."

Obviously, there was a lot brewing in HIMYM episode 21. There's the bit about the Captain and Lily's new career. And then there's a bit about Barney's wedding jitters. The way Barney took out his anxiety on Ted said a lot. It was almost as if he wanted Ted to take offense. It seemed like he wanted Ted to throw a last-ditch effort to fight for Robin. On top of it all, it was clear that the two couples are moving on and Ted will be left alone. Marshall and Lily are off to Rome. Robin and Barney starts a journey towards marriage. Nothing big in Ted's life, though. We just know he'd be depressed.

The speculation on Rome and New York locations is also supported by HIMYM creators' previous statement. Craig Thomas and Carter Bays said How I Met Your Mother Season 9 will be very different from the past eight seasons. Some fans are anticipating a huge time jump.

What could viewers expect in the last three episodes of HIMYM Season 8? Perhaps Barney will continue to manifest wedding anxiety in his upcoming bachelor party. The sitcom will return with a fresh episode on April 29.
