A week after the big reveal involving Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) in the Season 7 finale of How I Met Your Mother, fans are scouring the internet for clues on whether or not the next season is really the last one. The show's co-creator Craig Thomas has some answers.

First, a quick review on what Cobie Smulders had said in an interview a month before the airing of HIMYM finale.

In an interview with Bob Thompson a couple of weeks before Avengers opened in cinemas, Smulders had hinted Season 8 may not be the last season of the series.

"You would think, at this point, we would be figuring out a way to end this... But we seem to be doing better than we ever have, so we will continue as long as everybody wants us to."

Cobie was referring to the jump in ratings by the CBS sitcom.

In the same interview, Smulders said it was her HIMYM co-star Alyson Hannigan (Lily) who made it possible for her to be Agent Maria Hill in the blockbuster Marvel film. Hannigan called Avengers director, Joss Whedon to recommend her for the role. Whedon and Hannigan had worked on the series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Meanwhile, HIMYM co-creator Craig Thomas has told TVGuide the decision to create a Barney-Robin wedding was not a rushed idea.

"We always knew it was gonna be Barney and Robin (Cobie Smulders)," he said, adding the point of Season 7 finale The Magician's Code is "about misdirection and magic."

The magic alludes to all the tricks that Barney played before revealing an engagement ring to Quinn. The audience is somehow misdirected by the engagement that he was going to marry Quinn. But then, magic -- Barney's future bride turns out to be Robin, after all.

So what can HIMYM fans expect in Season 8? (Those who don't like to spoil the beginning of Season 8 must not read on.)

"Ted (Josh Radnor) got left at the altar by Stella (Sarah Chalke), so we pick up on Ted and Victoria driving off into the sunset," Thomas told TV Guide.

That's right, fair-and-sensitive-gentleman Ted will come to his senses and ask his ex-girlfriend if she had at least left a note for her supposed groom. That is how things will begin in September: a continuation of what happened in May.

Finally, Thomas told TV Guide it would be better if they (producers) would find out soon (from CBS) whether Season 8 would be their last because they want to create a big moment for that.

"Right now, there's so much to pick up on the finale that we're full for the first batch [of the season]," Thomas said, hinting that Season 8 is being planned as just another regular season - not the last one.
