"How I Met Your Mother" has just cast Abby Elliot to play the role of a certain Janeane, a new love interest for someone on the show. Could she be the long-awaited "mother?"

Negotiations are still ongoing among network, show runners and cast of the hit comedy series. Co-producers Craig Thomas and Craig Thomas have both said in previous interviews they have a specific way of ending the series. However, Season 8 has been prepared to be just another season - not really the last one.

As for Elliot, Thomas said she will be a part of "a multi-episode arc." It is not likely for her to appear early on in the season because both Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Ted (Josh Radnor) are still with their love interests. Barney is with Quinn (Becki Newton), while Ted appears to be in the beginning of an end with Viktoria (Ashley Williams).

The producers have said Season 8 will be a season of splits and heartbreaks.

The viewers already learned from the end of Season 7 that Barney will marry Robin. Ergo, he will break up with Quinn, eventually. Does he work on a rebound with Janeane?

Much earlier, Ted has mentioned he will meet the "mother" at the wedding. Viewers would then have to wait when and where would Janeane first appear in the series. But first, he has to end things - once and for all - with Viktoria.

Meanwhile, Robin (Cobie Smulders) is set to explore a romantic relationship with her "crush" (Michael Trucco), and that is likely to last a couple of episodes. Of course, that relationship will not last.

So there would be at least three break ups next season, while Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel) try to be the best parents they can be for Marvin Waitforit Eriksen.

Abby Elliot: 'Craziest girl' gang has ever encountered

Describing Elliot's character, Thomas said Janeane is "the craziest girl the HIMYM gang has ever encountered."

"And the strange, inexplicable phenomenon is: the crazier Janeane gets, the more attractive one of the gang finds her... It doesn't end well," Thomas added.

So Janeane is crazy, and it does not end well. If she will be with Barney, that's a bit too predictable. If she will be with Ted, HIMYM fans will have to wait and see before they could root for her to be the mother. (In which case, Thomas and Bays would have to make things work.)

Either way, Elliot, a recent graduate of "Saturday Night Live" is expected to bring more serious laughter on to the show.
