In the pilot, Penny (Lyndsy Fonseca) and Luke (David Henrie) sit on a couch, looking annoyed and restless. Fans immediately guessed the kids are looking into a video screen instead of a person sitting opposite them. Hence, there were speculations early on that in 2030, Ted Mosby is already dead.

But why are the kids in such a foul mood? It's all in the teens' ritual, other HIMYM fans guessed. There were also theories early on that the mother dies before 2030. HIMYM showrunners Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have reacted to this theory via Reddit. But does Ted or the mother really die in this hit CBS sitcom? How I Met Your Mother Season 9, Episode 19 seems like a big clue. But it could also be a misdirection.

"I don't want you to be the guy who lives in his stories. Life only moves forward," the mother tells Ted in a flash forward in How I Met Your Mother Season 9, Episode 19, titled "Vesuvius." Such a line is commonly associated to "last words." There are speculations saying there will be an eruption of emotions as powerful as the historic explosion of Mt Vesuvius.

In How I Met Your Mother Season 9, Episode 20, Marshall finds out that Lily went to see The Captain (Kyle MacLachlan) on the night of their big fight. Barney suggests that he goes to the captain's place to punch him in the face a couple of hours before the wedding.

In the HIMYM 9x20 promo videos, Lily says she is "busted" because the gang is confronting the captain. What could she have done?

The hour-long series finale of How I Met Your Mother airs on Mar. 31 on CBS. "Last Forever" could have a funeral scene, some fans suspect. This TVLine report shows a behind-the-scenes photo of Harris on his last filming day as Barney Stinson. So fans are wondering, will there be a funeral, a Mosby funeral in this (supposedly) comedy show?
