Google has already started rolling out the Android 4.4.2 update for all AOSP-supported Nexus devices. Many users were surprised to see this update since it was only a week ago that Google rolled out the Android 4.4.1 update that supposedly improved the Nexus 5 camera performance.

Android 4.4.2 doesn't bring much to the table unlike Android 4.4.1 though. It is mainly just a bug fixing release. See the official changelog below:

One of other changes include a fix for the flash SMS bug and removal of code that was needed for third party developers to call App Ops. Users who are still waiting for the Android 4.4.2 update on their Nexus devices can always manually sideload it. The process is very simple and does not require an unlocked bootloader or root access.

Step 1: Download the OTA file for your device below. Rename the file to "kk.zip" and transfer it to a new folder called "Google" on your desktop.

Step 2: Download the Fastboot/ADB files with the USB drivers for Windows below:

  • ADB/Fastboot - Mac, Windows

  • USB drivers for Windows

Install the drivers and extract the content of the Fastboot/ADB ZIP file in the "Google" folder you created on the desktop in Step 1.

Step 3: Put your Nexus device to Recovery mode. Do this by switching your device OFF, press the Volume down and Power button at the same time. After your device boots into bootloader mode, press the volume keys to navigate the "Recovery" option and select it by pressing the power button.

Nexus 4 users need to press the volume down, volume up, power button at the same time.

Once the Android logo with an exclamation mark appears on the screen, press the volume down and power button for 2 seconds. Try using the volume up, volume down and power button 4-5 times in a row. It can be finicky so be patient if you don't get into Recovery mode at your first try.

Step 4: Once the device boots into Recovery, press the volume key to select the "apply update from ADB" option and press the power key. Connect your device to the PC and open a new command prompt window on Windows or Terminal on Mac.

Navigate to the "Google" folder you made in Step 1. Windows users should press the Ctrl + Shift buttons and open the Google folder by right clicking it and selecting Open. Mac users should use the "cd" command to navigate the folder. After that copy paste the following command:

Windows: adb sideload kk.zip

Mac: ./adb sideload kk.zip

The OTA file will be transferred to the device and the installation will begin. After the installation completes, the device will reboot automatically. It will take some time so be patient. If your device is rooted or if you've deleted any APK from your Nexus device's system partition, you will get an error while sideloading the OTA update.
