Hugh Jackman revealed having his second basal-cell carcinoma (skin cancer) removal on the "X-Men: Days of Future Past" world premiere on May 10 in New York after showing in the premiere with a bandage over his nose.
Jackman confirmed in a report by Associated Press that he had another cancerous growth removed on May 8. The 45-year-old "X-men" star said that he had learned that another lump was growing in his nose through a biopsy on Thursday and he decided to have it removed right after.
In November 2013, Jackman posted a selfie on Instagram after he had been treated for skin cancer. The selfie showed Jackman with a bandage on his nose with a caption, "Deb (referring to his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness) said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right!" and he further wrote a line urging people to get check-ups and wear sunscreen, "Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!" Basal-cell carcinoma is a skin cancer which can be considered as the most common. It is slow-growing and may rarely metastasize and cause death but can cause disfigurement by destroying the surrounding tissue. The disease is considered as malignant.
Jackman has been an advocate for research on cancer according to CBC News. It was revealed that this advocacy was a requirement when he asked his mother-in-law Fay Duncan, who is the president of the Fight Cancer Foundation in Australia, blessings top marry her daughter.
The incidence of skin cancer is high in Australia. According to Cancer Council Australia, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with the disease before they age 70.
Jackman said that his second operation's prognosis was good and the disease is all out now.
Meanwhile, other famous personalities who had skin cancer were Ryan O'Neal, William Macy, Ewan McGregor, Brooke Shield, John McCain, Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Reagan,Anderson Cooper, Troy Aikman and Melanie Griffith.
May is also National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Advocates urges people that this month should be a moment to remember to protect and care for the skin and be vigilant of getting regular skin screenings.
