Formula One makes its annual stop at the Hungaroring on Sunday for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Ferrari, not having won a race since the Monaco GP on May 28, dominated proceedings in Saturday's qualifying as FIA World Championship leader Sebastian Vettel and teammate Kimi Raikkonen locked up the front row.
Lewis Hamilton, just a point shy of Vettel's 376, qualified in fourth place behind teammate Valtteri Bottas. The Mercedes duo has won six out of the ten races (Hamilton: 4, Bottas: 2) thus far as the German team leads the FIA Constructors' Championship with a tally of 330 points over Ferrari (275) and Red Bull (174).
After Hamilton's comfortable homecoming victory at Silverstone, the Briton was expected to take charge of the world title race. However, Saturday' qualifying session was a positive sign for the Scuderia faithful. Hamilton acknowledged that his team failed to ride the momentum from victories at Silverstone and Red Bull Ring.
"This hasn't been the easiest weekend for us. We knew Ferrari would be quick after seeing their pace this morning, so considering that fact I think we did pretty well to lock out row two. Ferrari seems to have the upper hand this weekend and this race is usually a procession on a circuit where it is hard to follow, so there aren't many opportunities to gain positions. But we will be giving it everything we can," the three-time world champion said in Saturday's press conference.
Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo topped both practice sessions Friday and was on course for a start in the front row. However, the Aussie will start from sixth place, after losing time due to a mechanical glitch in the final practice session. Teammate Max Verstappen would start from fifth place. McLaren Honda, placed dead last in the constructors race, enjoyed a resurgence Saturday as Ferando Alonso and Belgian teammate Stoffel Vandoorne clinched the seventh and eigth places respectively, in Sunday's starting rid.
Ricciardo, a native of Perth, Australia, admitted that the mechanical problem likely cost him a podium finish on Sunday. "When you miss out on track time in any session it has a knock-on effect and the time we lost this morning in FP3 definitely cost us in Qualifying. We had to guess what the track would be like this afternoon and make set-up changes based on that. We are in the top three teams so to qualify sixth is basically last for us."
The 2017 Formula One season moves to Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix in the final weekend of August. Ferrari and Fernando Alonso would hope to come away from Hungary ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the riveting FIA World Championship race.
