'Hunger Games' Josh Hutcherson Speaks Up on Gay Rights: 'I Had Two Uncles Die from AIDS'
Josh Hutcherson is proving he's not only a great actor, but an advocate for the Gay & Lesbian community. Apart from his mother's beliefs that molded him into an exceptional human being, Josh had two gay uncles who had given him strength to fight for what he believes is right.
Before Josh was thrust into the limelight as Peeta Mellark in the highly-acclaimed, "The Hunger Games", Hutcherson played varied roles from the bullying older brother of "Zathura" to the son of two lesbian mothers in "The Kids are All Right".
A few fans who have admired Josh just recently will also be surprised to learn that the 19-year old actor had two gay uncles, which had driven him to fight for equality between the sexes. In an exclusive interview with E! Online, Josh opens up on his personal life starting off with his two deceased uncles.
"They were in their early thirties, in great shape, but unfortunately they were taken away from us too soon," said Josh. "Both passed away at about the time I was born."
Despite not being able to have met his uncles, Josh had never forgotten them. Now, Josh is one of the most outspoken advocates in the fight for gay and lesbian equal rights. Along with his best friend and co-star in the film "The Kids are All Right", Avan Jogia, Josh works in the group "Straight but Not Narrow".
His uncles may have given him an inspiration to fight alongside Hollywood celebrities striving for equality but Josh's' mom had been his primary role model.
"My mom has always been a big advocate, especially in the gay, lesbian, transsexual and bisexual community so for me it's always been a part of my soul," shared Hutcherson.
Though he is yet to receive the Vanguard Award at the upcoming GLAAD Media Awards at Los Angeles, Josh shared that his biggest achievement comes in the form of a simple letter from a 14-year old high school freshman whose life changed because of SBNN.
"He was in this very right wing and religious sort of area and he sent a letter saying how SBNN changed his life and how he was able to feel more comfortable coming out to his friends," recalled Josh. "I was almost bawling reading it. That makes all our work worth it."
The world may be proud of his exquisite acting skills and his fan base may be screaming their hearts out because of his most recent role, but what makes Josh exceptional from the rest of Hollywood is his firm belief in what he knows and thinks is right.
"This is what my family is most proud of and the same for me," says Josh Hutcherson. "Acting is one thing, but actually trying to change the world and the way people think to make people's lives better? That's the stuff I'm most proud of."
