IBM May Cut Up to 8,000 Jobs Worldwide
The job cuts in IBM continue as more than 3,000 employees in North America lost their jobs as of Monday, according to the company's IBM Labor Union Alliance.
Based on union data, the most number of job cuts in IBM's business unit is in Software Group marketing department with 222 cuts. Systems and Technology Group semiconductor research and development follows with 165 job cuts, Software Group Information Management with 137, Software Group Industry Solutions with 126 and STG Storage Systems Development with 121 job cuts.
The IBM labor union also revealed that more than 100 workers are due for layoff in four more departments. Although the company has not exactly confirmed the number of jobs it's planning to cut, IBM CFO Mark Loughridge says most of the job cuts for this year will happen outside of the U.S.
After seeing company performance results in the first quarter of this year, Mr Loughridge explains that the company will be rebalancing its workforce in the second quarter.
Last year, IBM had $800 million worth of charges in workforce rebalancing for the year. This 2013, the company expects charges to reach almost $1 billion and now concentrated during the second quarter.
Bloomberg analyst Sarah Frier said the amount would mean job cuts of 6,000 to 8,000 in the global offices of IBM. The company has 700 job cuts in Germany, 250 in Italy and 128 jobs in Denmark.
Job cuts in IBM Australia
In Australia, earlier reports in June said IBM Australia is looking to let go of around 1,200 to 1,500 jobs because of global restructuring. IBM Australia plans to send jobs offshore to Asian countries and New Zealand to save on costs. The IBM office in Australia has refused to comment on the exact number of jobs it plans to cut.
Reports also say IBM may be planning to cut 500 jobs in China according to a tech news site.
