Iggy Azalea Files Lawsuit Against Ex-Boyfriend Over Unauthorised Release Of Her Songs And Not Over Sex Tape
Iggy Azalea has been making headlines recently due to an alleged sex tape with an ex-boyfriend. Azalea has reportedly filed a lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend, Maurice Williams, more popularly known as Jefe Wine, not because of the raunchy scandal but because she claimed that the rapper has released her songs without her permission.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Azalea filed the complaint on Sept. 17 in a federal court in California. THR obtained a copy of Azalea's complaint and it said that the songs taken from her unreleased masters constitutes copyright infringement.
The lawsuit stated that Williams downloaded the entire contents of Azalea's personal computer sometime between April 2008 and January 2009. There was no reference to a sex tape on the complaint, but it further said that the music from Azalea's unreleased masters were copied on to a portable hard drive without her approval.
In August, the songs from Azalea's unreleased masters began showing up on digital music service application such as iTunes, the Google Play Store, Spotify, Pandora, and other major online retailers. Williams claimed that Azalea signed an agreement that allows him to distribute her works, but Azalea denied having signed such thing and accused Wine of forging an artist management agreement that she has previously signed when she met Kareem Chapman, who was believed then to be a talent manager. Below is an excerpt from Azalea's complaint:
"As a result of their actions, Defendants are liable to Azalea for willful copyright infringement under 17 U.S.C. § 501. Azalea suffered, and will continue to suffer, substantial damage, including the value of Defendants' unauthorized use, loss of the right to control her work, loss of the right to keep the Unreleased Masters unpublished, and other losses, in an amount not yet ascertained, but which will be determined, according to proof."
The Guardian's Douglas Cobb wrote in his column that if the court rules in favour of the Aussie-born singer-rapper, it would mean that not only the distribution of her songs will be blocked, but the distribution of sex tape (if true) as well.
Azalea has reaped much success in 2014. Her song "Fancy" had ruled the charts for a long time. She also did collaborations with some of the industry's biggest music artists including Ariana Grande, Rita Ora, and Jennifer Lopez. She has received endorsement deals and even hosting gigs. Azalea is also expected to create a shoe line for designer Steve Madden in the coming months.
