Curt Leigh Dixon discovered the strange-looking carcass near Nature's Valley at Plettenberg Bay. Residents, when they saw the photo, thought it was the corpse of an extra terrestrial.
However, local veterinarians dashed their hopes and said that based on an autopsy on the body, it was not an alien but a baby baboon. Dr Magdalena Braum of the Crags Veterinary Clinic explained the twisted shape and emaciated body to the mother baboon probably dragging the dead body.
"We have seen it quite often in baboon research troops, when females carry the deceased infants sometime for as long as three to four weeks on their tail section before finally discarding them," The Independent quoted the vet.
She said the ordeal caused the carcass to be stretched, but other measurements indicate it was a baby baboon.
However, Curt said locals still doubt because the teeth did not look like that of a primate.
