Infrastructure NSW to drive state back to business
The introduction of the legislation to create Infrastructure NSW, a new body to help get infrastructure going again in the state, makes a strong signal the NSW is back in business.
Infrastructure NSW is a welcome step toward better infrastructure planning and delivery in New South Wales, said the nation’s peak infrastructure group, Infrastructure Partnerships Australia (IPA).
IPA Chief Executive, Brendan Lyon said this offers the opportunity to draw a line under the past and snap New South Wales out of its infrastructure paralysis.
“Infrastructure NSW is being given considerable powers to oversee the strategic planning and delivery of major projects. This is important because it restores integrity and transparency to the infrastructure programme in New South Wales,” he said.
“Business is optimistic that Infrastructure NSW will begin to drive a step change in the way projects are conceived and delivered.
“Infrastructure NSW will need to be fearless and direct in its advice to government about the tough reforms that are needed, particularly in terms of funding.
IPA believes having the body report to the Premier means there will be both political will and accountability for the infrastructure programme.
This will allow Infrastructure NSW to put the ruler over the work of line agencies and compile a consensus plan for growth in New South Wales, it said.
Mr Lyon said “It is no secret that infrastructure planning and delivery has not been done well in recent years. Infrastructure NSW provides the opportunity to align the whole government toward better planning and better projects.
