Insurance workers support changes to policies that will standardise the flood cover assisting consumers to better understand what they are covered for, according to the Finance Sector Union.

But the union has called on consumers and the Government to make sure that their frustrations with parts of the industry in the aftermath of the floods around the country are directed at those responsible for designing policies and making decisions, not at the insurance employees paid to implement them.

National Secretary, Leon Carter, said "We understand people's frustration and anger at being told that the fine print in their insurance policies excludes them from cover when they have lost their homes and possessions.

"Our members working insurance dread having to provide such devastating news to customers and they share the community anger that their employers didn't provide them with better products to allow them do more to meet customer's needs."

Mr Carter said members have been under enormous pressure to meet the needs of the community in the wake of the floods across Australia and that stress occurs both as a result of the enormous workloads they are required to meet and the emotional impact of dealing with distraught families.

"They have expressed their support for the Government to act to make sure that policies are better designed and more easily understood by consumers so they can provide them with the products they need," he said.

"It's just typical self interest that company executives come out sabre rattling about how they will drive up the costs of premiums if they are forced to actually provide decent insurance cover for communities"

According to Mr Carter, it is important that the community directs its anger at those responsible for these policies and decisions, the company boards and executives not the employees.

"And it is important that the Government in seeking reform of the industry's practices does not incite community hostility against insurance workers who support their proposed changes," he said.
