He allegedly ran away after a huge windfall caused by a bank mistake; now he is set to go to court.

A New Zealand man was arrested by Interpol officers after he was identified as the man who is wanted on multiple counts of theft and money laundering after allegedly fleeing to China

Leo Gao Hui, 30, who used to operate a petrol station in New Zealand, had been held in Hong Kong since September 29 after his arrest.

"Pursuant to an order for surrender made by the chief executive, arrangements were made for the return of the man to New Zealand today," Hong Kong police said in a statement on Wednesday.

Gao made international headlines in 2009 when he and partner Kara Hurring left the country after Westpac bank put $NZ10 million ($7.6 million) into his business account in response to his request for a $NZ100,000 overdraft, ABC reported.

The mistake was discovered within days but the bank could not reverse the transaction as $NZ6.78 million had allegedly been transferred into other accounts and the couple had left New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Hurring has already voluntarily returned to New Zealand and will face trial next year on charges of stealing $NZ11,000 and laundering $HK1.5 million ($192,000) in Macau, according to ABC News.
