Iranian Actress Sentenced to Prison, 90 Lashes for Aussie Film Role
Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to spend a year in jail and receive 90 lashes for her leading role in Australian film "My Tehran for Sale," which is about western influence in the Islamic republic.
Vafamehr's charges were reportedly related to her not wearing a hijab and showing her shaved head in the film, which was seen in Tehran only through the black market.
Interestingly, Vafamehr plays the role of a young actress in Tehran whose theatre work is banned by the authorities.
Due to a news blackout on the case, it was not clear whether Vafamehr was arrested in June or July, but she reportedly received her sentence this weekend, Fairfax media reports, citing Iranian opposition website kalameh.com as source that broke the news blackout.
Australian Kate Croser from the film's Adelaide production house Cyan Films, told News.com.au the company had offered assistance to the family but there was uncertainly on how the firm could help.
"There is an appeal which could be lengthy and the family may still believe that public comment will be unhelpful because they are going through all the official channels," she said.
"We can say the charges were that there was no permit for filming, which is not true, and that in some scenes Marzieh was not wearing a hijab and had a shaved head."
The film's Melbourne-based director, Iranian-Australian Granaz Moussavi, did not want to comment in honor of Vafamehr's family's wishes, Fairfax reports.
