'Iron Man 3' and 'Gatsby' Competes at Box Office
"Iron Man 3" is back at no. 1 in the box office, putting "Gatsby" down a notch, Reuters reports. To date, "Iron Man 3" is the better movie across the U.S. and Canada.
"Iron Man 3" is a Disney Co's Marvel Studios movie starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, a billionaire with a superhero alter ego.
"Iron Man 3" acquired ticket sales amounting to $72.5 million between Friday and Sunday, marking its second week in cinemas.
Ticket revenue in the U.S. had reportedly decreased to 58 per cent as compared to the movie's remarkable opening amounting to $174.1 million. This figure is the second-biggest movie opening of all time, Reuters said.
Outside of the U.S., the movie acquired a whopping $664 million, Disney reported.
At present "Iron Man 3" has reached $949 million ticket revenue worldwide.
"Gatsby", an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzegerald, on the other hand acquired $51.1 million. This figure was impressive when compared to the predicted opening sale of only $45 million.
The weekend opening of the film has reportedly failed to reach the opening sales of Lurmann's most successful film, "Moulin Rouge".
Warners Bros said that the majority of the ticket buyers were female by 59 per cent to 41 per cent, and 31 percent of ticket buyers were under age 25.
"Gatsby" is a movie directed by Australian Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and is the latest adaptation of the classic "The Great Gatsby."
It is recalled that a 1974 movie adaptation of the same novel starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow performed unsuccessfully during the box office.
Award winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio plays as the millionaire who yearned for a forlorn love, played by Carey Mulligan.
Given the Hedonistic 1920's setting of the film, rapper Jay-Z produced the soundtrack of the film - this put audience of the whole theme of the movie. Reactions has it that the soundtrack contributed a lot as to why there were unpleasant words-of-mouth about the film.
Dan Fellman, president of theatrical distribution for Warner Bros still expresses his optimism on "Gatsby".
He said that Disney "never expected to open this picture at this level. The picture, which has been accorded the prestigious opening night slot at this week's Cannes Film Festival, was now well-positioned for a long term run into the summer as an alternative to traditional action movies."
There is no doubt that DiCaprio gave his role justice but movie critics doubt the film as whole. By Saturday, there was already 48 per cent of reviews recommending "Gatsby" on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
Other movies shown this weekend in the dark comedy film "Pain and Gain" starring Mark Wahlberg is in a far distance from "Gatsby" with only $5 million revenue both in the U.S. and Canada.
Next on the list was the comedy film "Peeples" wich has ticket sales amounting to $4.9 million. The film was produced by Tyler Perry, starring Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington.
Fifth place on the box office list is the baseball drama "42" with sales at $4.7 million.
Meanwhile, Paramount reports that "Star Trek Into Darkness acquired $31.7 million in its opening on Wednesday in Britain, Mexico, Australia and Germany.
