From Iron Ore To Infant Formula, Gina Rinehart To Build $175M Cancer Hospital In Darwin
There is no stopping Australia's richest person, Gina Rinehart, from further expanding her estimated $22 billion wealth. Reports said that the mining tycoon is constructing a $175 million cancer hospital in Darwin.
According to Michael Copeman, medical adviser of Rinehart, the oncology and specialist hospital would have 20 beds of which two would be reserved for Darwin residents.
Being privately owned and run, the upcoming hospital would focus on cancer treatments and non-invasive keyhole and robotic surgeries. Skynews, however, noted that having wealthy sick people as its target clients, most treatments in the facility would not be covered by Medicare or private health insurers. It hopes to attract ill patients from abroad by marketing the hospital as a regional leader in cancer treatment.
But Copeman stressed that the hospital would not be a business enterprise, but "a gift." So as not to burden the Northern Territory with running the hospital, the doctor said that they are eyeing Healthscope, a private hospital operator, to manage the facility.
The project proponents are scouting for potential site where to construct the health facility, but he added that they prefer a location near the Royal Darwin Hospital and Darwin Private Hospital.
She was also in Darwin to attend the yearly conference of the Small Business Association of Australia on Saturday evening.
