Irrational Games Shutting Down—What Will Happen to BioShock Infinite?
Despite the success and massively positive reception of BioShock Infinite last 2013, it seems that the bigger surprise lies with Ken Levine, co-founder and studio director over at Irrational Games.
He has recently announced that Irrational Games will be no more as a studio, as he will be bringing in 15 people alone from the existing Irrational Games to Take-Two, where he aims to start over with a new focus and direction.
"I'll be winding down Irrational Games as you know it. I'll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two," said Levine in the official Irrational Games web site. "In time, we will announce a new endeavor with a new goal: To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable."

In addition to this, Levine has also revealed that they are planning to focus on content delivered digitally.
This comes after the last DLC of BioShock Infinite has rolled out. Sadly, besides the 15 who will be coming with Levine to Take-Two, it will be a big goodbye, as he states in his note to fans.
"Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one. And working with the incredibl team at Irrational Games is indeed the best job I've ever had. To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers."
Admittedly, Irrational Games has come far from the three-person studio that it once was 17 years ago.

BioShock Infinite's final DLC will be Burial at Sea Episode 2, which will be coming out on March 25 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Still, this may not mean that BioShock as a franchise will come to an end, since Levine has stated that it will merely transfer hands as they make the transition.
"I'm handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative. If we're lucky, we'll build something half as memorable as BioShock."
All about profit?
Another angle to look at this beyond a fresh start is suggested by VG 24/7, where the report focuses on the benefits that Take-Two gets from the whole incident. You have Levine, who is revered as a talent and a visionary in the industry, and his own handpicked team who will be focusing on a new kind of game creation.

More than the entire studios expenses and creative talent being shouldered as finances by Take-Two, they are able to slim down the entire studio to just the lucky few, so they can streamline the costs of what it takes to be creative, and what it takes to sell a game.
Far beyond the name of Irrational Games as a studio, it seems that Take-Two still gets what appears to be important--the name and talent of Levine and the team who could aim to create a new kind of franchise beyond BioShock.
