ISIS Warns of More Lone Wolf Attacks After Praising Sydney Siege Gunman's 'Daring Raid'
ISIS' propaganda magazine Dabiq only has high praises for the man responsible for the recent Sydney siege. The extremist group encouraged others to follow Man Haron Monis' "daring raid" of a café in Sydney's Martin Place where two hostages were killed including the gunman.
ISIS has also called for more "lone wolf" attacks in Australia and taunted the West for its helplessness in the face of the threat, according to the Daily Mail. Monis and two hostages, Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson, died in the bloody siege that ended in the early morning of Dec. 16.
In the magazine, ISIS described Monis as a brother and acknowledged his efforts to fight in the path of Allah. The group praised Monis who ISIS said was acting alone and hitting the kuffar or non-believers in their own lands and the streets where people thought they were safe. ISIS flaunted the fact that it didn't take much for Monis to take his gun, storm into a Sydney café and hold everyone hostage. By masterminding the Sydney siege, ISIS said Monis created mass panic and caused terror in Australia.
The Dabiq magazine praised Monis' efforts in making the black flag with Arabic writing visible in a window of the Lindt café. ISIS saw the flag as a "testament to his sincerity" and lauded Monis as one of the Muslims who answered the call of ISIS to strike those who wage war with extremist group.
It was in October when Dabiq published ISIS' calls for supporters to launch lone wolf attacks in Western countries especially in the U.S., UK, Australia, France and Germany. ISIS repeated the call in the recent edition of Dabiq. The group warned that there will be others who will follow Monis and Numan Haider's example. Haider was shot dead in Australia after stabbing two police officers. ISIS said the West cannot do anything but wait for the next round of "slaughter" and issue the same statement condemning the attack.
The Guardian reported that Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has earlier said that there is a heightened level of "terrorist chatter" following the Sydney siege. The country's terror threat level remains high which indicated a terror attack is still likely.
