Israel to Release Palestinian Prisoners Tuesday
Israel is all set to release 26 Palestinian prisoners today as announced a couple of days back August 10. The names of the prisoners, which had been chosen by the ministerial committee, got published overnight.
12 prisoners are going to be sent to West Bank while the rest to Gaza Strip. 2 prisoners are expected to be released in the coming months whereas 8 more in the coming years.
The peace talks between the two seem to be going on the right track as the government of Israel decides to release those long-term prisoners. The decision is a part of the settlement both the countries are expected to make in the peace talks which are going to pick up next week from where they were left off.
The prisoners are expected to be set free Tuesday. The reason behind taking some time before releasing the prisoners is that the family members of the victims are going to need the same for dealing with legal challenges which may turn up at the last moment.
The decision to free the prisoners was taken after Israel was accused of sabotaging the peace settlements. Palestinian officials insisted that Israel had approved about 1,200 fresh settlements. On the other hand, the Israeli government challenged the criticism as they argued that Palestine is expected agree to land swaps as it one of major aspect of the peace initiative.
Around half a million Jews are settled in over 100 settlements which have been built since 1967 when Israel occupied East Jerusalem and West Bank. These settlements are regarded as illegal if international laws are to be followed. On the other hand, Israel disputes the illegality of the same.
On the contrary, a group of people protested against Israel's decision to release the prisoners. The group apparently consisted of members of the victims' family. They demonstrated in Jerusalem in front of the Israeli Supreme Court.
Yaakov Tobel talked to Yedioth Ahronoth, a local newspaper. Tobel's son had been killed back in 1990. He seemed not to sleep properly as he did always picture his son's death and recreate the moment in his mind.
Even though people like Yakoov Tobel are allowed to fight in the court, it is unlikely that the diplomatic decision is going to be affected by their emotion.
