Israeli Company Launches Mini Computer for $99
Utilite, a mini computer, is going to be available for as low as $99.
The innovation is made by Israel maker CompuLab which specialises in embedded computer products. The size of the mini computer is 5.3in x 3.9in x 0.8in, which means that the mini computer is about the same in size like a pack of index cards. On the other hand, the small size of Utilite does not prevent it from being extremely productive.
The Freescale i.MX6 system-on-a-chip is a powerful tool along with its ARM Cortex A9 processor. One can install 4GB RAM as it supports a hard drive up to 512GB. While it may sound a bit mundane to have a computer with a 512GB hard disk these days since almost every other computer comes with at least 1TB hard disk. However, one must remember that the computer can turn out to be extremely beneficial for students because of its cost, performance and size. The design of the computer allows the user to travel conveniently.
Some other companies also developed mini computers like FXI Cotton Candy, ODroid-X, BeagleBone Black and Raspberry Pi, which are specifically targeted for schools with limited funds. Utilite can pose great threat to all those with its ultra-low price, without compromising the quality. The dual-head display (1080p) adds more glamour to the efficacy of the same.
There are four USB2.0 ports, a couple of them are on the back and a couple on the front side of the computer. It has also got a built-on WiFi (802.11n) and a Bluetooth module. A mini connector for RS232 and a micro-USB connector for USB OTG are there on the front panel.
Raspberry Pi or Utilite?
For $99, one can buy 4 Raspberry Pi computers, but only one Utilite. However, you must remember that Raspberry Pi can be very basic. It does not include a carrying case either. If you opt for Utilite, you actually get a lot for the entire package. The Utilite may find a greater acceptance among the users for the convenience and economic value it offers. It can be placed almost anywhere, in the backpack, under the dashboard and even in a small cabinet beside your bed.
