Jackson 'Possibly' Addicted to Botox and Painkillers: Witness
The Los Angeles trial of Dr. Conrad Murray heard Thursday that pop superstar Michael Jackson was taking huge shots of painkillers like Demerol and Botox treatments months before his untimely death in 2009.
A defense witness, addiction expert Dr. R. Waldman, couldn't say whether Jackson was addicted to these drugs or not.
Murray's lawyers have claimed Jackson was addicted to painkillers and Botox treatments and went "doctor shopping" to get the drugs he wanted.
Murray admitted in a statement to the authorities that he gave Jackson drugs including the anesthetic propofol as a means to induce sleep. Medical examiners and authorities ruled these drugs were the major culprits of Jackson's sudden death June 25, 2009.
On the other hand, Murray said he was not aware of Jackson's intake of another type of drug (Demerol) which was prescribed to him by his Beverly Hills doctor and dermatologist, which interfered with his sleep.
Waldman confirmed that withdrawal from Demerol can produce side effects that include insomnia and anxiety.
Waldman added that he believes Jackson was dependent on Demerol and he has evidence of it. Waldman also added that Jackson was "possibly" addicted to painkillers. But he could not say anything certain when he was aggressively cross-examined. In the end, he acknowledged that he was is not a certified addiction expert or specialist.
