Avatar director James Cameron topped Vanity Fair’s survey compiling the 40 highest earners in Hollywood for 2010 earning $257 million for his blockbuster hit.

The director is followed by actor Johnny Depp earning $100 million during the same time. The actor had a productive year with the release of hits Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist, and advance payment for next installments of the Pirates of the Caribbean:series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The Vanity Fair survey only computed earnings made from film projects by producers, writers, actors and directors , not including advertisements or earnings from other projects. For example, director Steven Spielberg was paid $80 million for Universal theme-park royalties in addition to consulting fees for War Horse.

Inception actor Leonardo DiCaprio took the fifth spot with $62 million while Alice in Wonderland director Tim Burton earned earned $53 million. Moreover, The Hangover writer and director Todd Phillips took eighth place.

The youngest people on the list were Twilight star Taylor Lautner who earned $33 million and was included in the top ten and his co-stars in the film franchise co-stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson 13th and 15th place respectively.
