“Oz” Actor, James Franco Slams Australian Authorities
Former Oscars host, James Franco has been making noise for his public opposition and open disagreement over the Australian government’s decision to ban the gay sex film, I Want Your Love.
The “Oz” actor wants no love from the Australian Classification Board but a ticket for the film’s screening for a number of upcoming film festivals Down Under.
Citing as “indecent” the sequences in Travis Mathews’ gay film, the Australian government-sponsored commission banned the screening of I Want Your Love at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival and the Brisbane Queer Film Festival.
Noting that the film could have exposed the audience for a graphic sexual scenes between men, it was not allowed to be shown in what some residents a “conservative country.”
“This is such a disappointment to me and seems really silly,” Franco said in a statement, according to Deadline.com
The actor took to YouTube and recorded the statement expressing his opposing views. Franco defended Mathews on the style he utilized to represent the gay relationship on the film. Mathews had previously collaborated with Franco on a Sundance entry, “Interior Leather Bag.”
Mathews explained his style and why he used such approach in the film, saying he did so "as a tool to show character development, interpersonal issues, intimacy, playfulness and something overall closer to the reality I'm familiar with," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Franco said in Mathews defense: “He was using sex in a very sophisticated way… [and] to keep it from films that want to explore it as human behavior is very shortsighted and I think very hypocritical. I don’t think we’d be having this conversation if he’d made a very violent film.”
I Want Your Love will miss the grand opening of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival should the Australian board not change its mind until March 14.
The decision has been sending mixed messages to the viewing public since the commission has allowed an even more graphic sex scene between an animal and a human being in a film titled Donkey Love screened at various festivals last year.
