"Insidious" director James Wan debuts his new horror movie, "The Conjuring" at the Los Angeles Film Festival. "We can't wait to see you guys squirm," actress Hayley McFarland, who plays one of the five Perron sisters, said before the screening.

The audience were chattering uncomfortably as they wait for the horror to unfold. Set in the early 1970s, "The Conjuring" tells the story of two paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, as they attempt to save the Perron Family from disturbing events in their home.

Just like in "Insidious", the movie's main antagonist, an old ghost lady, scares the family by hanging from trees and clapping. "The Conjuring" delivers an impressive throwback to old school supernatural horror movies.

Varmiga was remarkable for her portrayal of Lorraine as she "resonates an extraordinary sensitivity", The Hollywood Reporter noted.

Wan confessed that the work of Ed and Lorraine were based from "The Exorcist" and "Amityville Horror". "I didn't want to make an action film," he said. "I was trying to exercise restraint ... I wanted to stay true to the Warrens and the Perron family and show this through their point of view."

The director, who was born in Malaysia but was raised in Australia, has been carving his name in the horror genre. Apart from "Insidious", he also directed its sequel "Insidious Chapter 2" and "Saw". He is also set to direct the action film "Fast and Furious 7" for 2014.
