'Jane The Virgin' star Justin Baldoni opens up about off-screen chemistry with Gina Rodriguez
While the hit comedy series “Jane The Virgin” is on a three-week hiatus, fans of the show are holding their breath. Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) is still nowhere close to making a choice between her baby daddy, Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni), and her ex-fiance Michael Cordero (Brett Dier). In a recent interview, Baldoni opens up about his on-screen and off-screen chemistry with his leading lady.
“Gina and I have a lot in common. It is really interesting that we were paired together in this crazy show,” says Baldoni, in an interview with Bello Magazine, where he appears on the November cover. “When we met, there was this instant chemistry but it was not a sexual chemistry. It was not necessarily about the acting, but rather about what we can do outside of it,” he continued.
He speaks further about how both he and Rodriguez have philanthropic inclinations. In the show, they showed off some of the same vibe with their characters. After discussing estate planning for their son, Mateo, Jane and Rafael came up with a plan to give back to charity, while keeping their son grounded.
Once Mateo comes of age, he will be allowed to receive money from his trust fund. However, each dollar that he receives will be matched with an equal donation to charity. This satisfies Rafael’s goal of giving his son a good life, while it also pacifies Jane’s worries about him becoming spoiled.
Unfortunately, while Baldoni and Rodriguez get along very well in real life, their characters are currently at odds. In Episode 7, Jane has discovered that Rafael planted an informant in order to get her ex-fiance in trouble with the law. Michael lost his job as a result, and the confrontation between Michael and Rafael injured baby Mateo.
Many things can still happen this season, and Jane will eventually have to repair her relationship with at least one of them. After all, she will reportedly be getting married at the end of the season.
The mid-season finale and Christmas special will be airing on Monday, Dec. 9, at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
