Jarryd Hayne News: 49ers rookie needs a 'flawless’ training week to be active again, says Roger Craig
San Francisco 49ers rookie Jarryd Hayne got benched for the first time in his rookie season during the team’s 20-3 loss against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday. Despite being inactive on game day last week, Hayne is still looking forward to suit up for the 49ers when the team faces the St. Louis Rams in week 8 of the NFL 2015-2016 season.
Hayne is looking forward to get back in action for the 49ers when the team faces the Rams next week at Edward Jones Dome. However, according to Roger Craig, three-time Super Bowl winner with the 49ers, the Australian rookie sensation should be “flawless” in training this week to regain his spot in San Francisco’s game day active roster.
“Jarryd has to be flawless in training this week,” Craig wrote on Fox Sports. “You could argue it’s not fair to place that much pressure on practise drills, but he’s in a position where he can’t give the coaching staff any reason not to play him.”
Craig noted that the 49ers need to take off pressure on Carlos Hyde, who has been playing with a nagging foot injury. While Reggie Bush, who's recovering from a calf strain, helps relieve Hyde’s workload, Craig insisted that playing Hayne has also plenty of upsides.
Hayne has approached 49ers coach Jim Tomsula and asked what he needs to do to get back in returning punts or playing as backup running back. The Australian rookie sensation admitted he was disappointed about getting benched, but Hayne immediately accepted the setback as a learning curve in his rookie stint with San Francisco.
"It's a cut-throat sport,” Hayne said, reports Stuff. “I'm just going to embrace it and keep working hard and move forward."
Hayne might have the chance to bounce back from his recent setbacks when the team faces St. Louis Rams (3-3) in week 8 of the NFL. The 49ers, now with two wins and five losses, will have to win their remaining games if they want to keep the club’s playoff hopes alive.
