NBA superstar Jason Collins became a hot topic after publicly admitting about his homosexuality. Though the social networking sites were flooded with mixed reactions, the first active gay basketball player managed to say "Thank You" to the supportive fans that sent well-wishing messages on his decision to finally come out.
"Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me thru email, texts, calls, tweets, letters and every other form of communication. #support," Collins wrote on his Twitter account @jasoncollins34 on Monday, April 29.
The 12-year NBA veteran player further posted on Twitter a message that reads: "All the support I have received today is truly inspirational. I knew that I was choosing the road less traveled but I'm not walking it alone."
Jason Collins, 34, made his big revelation in the Sports Illustrated magazine May 2013 issue. Ernie Grunfeld, the Washington Wizards President, released a statement that shows his support on Collin's confession but did not mention whether he will retain the Wizards player or not.
"We are extremely proud of Jason and support his decision to live his life proudly and openly. He has been a leader on and off the court and an outstanding teammate throughout his NBA career. Those qualities will continue to serve him both as a player and as a positive role model for others of all sexual orientation," Grunfeld stated.
Famous celebrities, politicians and sports superstars expressed their support and admiration for Jason Collins from film director Spike Lee to TV host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres who also made headlines with her revelation on her sexual orientation.
Even US President Barack Obama reportedly reached out to the NBA player to praise his courage and offer support. Other NBA superstars like Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash guided a multitude of players and celebrities in expressing their support for Jason Collins's big announcement. "The time has come. Maximum respect," Steve Nash wrote on his Twitter account @SteveNash.
