Jason Day hungry to take No.1 spot from Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth
Australia’s Jason Day will have the chance to become world No. 1 in golf rankings at Deutsche Bank Championship this weekend. With just a win away from claiming the top spot, Day is hungrier than ever to end his season on a high note, with being the world No.1, his “number one priority in life.”
Coming off a stunning runaway win at The Barclays, the PGA championship winner is set to continue his dominant performance on the second leg of the four-tournament event in Boston. A win in the Deutsche Bank Championship, and a third place finish from world No. 2 Jordan Spieth and current world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, would sit Day atop the golf world standings.
“I've always wanted to get to No.1 in the world. I'm on the verge of it," Day said, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Day also confessed that he is shooting for McIlroy and Spieth in the upcoming tournament, which will run from Sept. 5-7. With the Australian golfer closer than ever to the top of the world golf rankings, Day admitted it makes him even hungrier to overtake McIlroy’s throne, which the Irishman currently holds for a total of 94 weeks.
Day caused a massive stir in the golfing world seven years ago, when he declared he can take down then world No. 1 Tiger Woods. But now, it seems certain that Day could do that feat with Woods himself being the Aussie’s mentor.
According to ESPN, Day revealed he credits his success in part to Woods, whom he have been in conversation with regularly. Day admitted he and Woods have been frequently exchanging text messages about family, but mainly topics about golf.
"He's been arguably one of the best players of all time. Who wouldn't want that mentorship from a player like that, especially on the golf course?” Day said. The 27-year-old Day has now tied Spieth with four PGA Tour victories and is seeded first in the overall standings of the FedEx Cup.
