Jeff Teague Free Agency: Mavs, Pelicans, Knicks, Kings to try and sway point guard from Indiana
Jeff Teague has his heart set on re-signing with hometown franchise, the Indiana Pacers, during NBA Free Agency 2017. However, the veteran point guard is not ruling out the possibility of signing elsewhere. According to a report, teams such as the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings will try to sway Teague away from Indiana during July's free agency period.
The Pacers acquired Teague last summer in a three-team trade involving the Utah Jazz and Atlanta Hawks. After acquiring George Hill from Indiana, the Jazz sent their No. 12 overall draft pick to Atlanta. The Hawks drafted promising forward Taurean Prince with the lottery pick in an effort to trim down the average age of the roster. With Hill helping the Jazz acquire the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference, it's fair to state that the trade benefitted all three parties.
"I love Indiana, man. You all know me, born and raised, tattoos on my arm. I’ve wanted to play with the Pacers my whole life. It’s a great opportunity for me to be here, and I love it," Teague told The Indianapolis Star Sunday while addressing his future. Teague and the Pacers suffered a 4-0 series sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers after Sunday's Game 4 defeat at home. It could have possibly been Teague's last game in a Pacers uniform.
Jeff Teague Free Agency: Mavs, Knicks, Pelicans and Kings to suit up
According to ESPN, "teams that could have interest in Teague include the Dallas (Mavericks), New Orleans (Pelicans), New York (Knicks) and Sacramento (Kings)." All four teams are in dire need for a starting quality point guard. While the Mavs finished the season starting undrafted rookie Yogi Ferrell, the Pelicans could lose Jrue Holiday in free agency while the Knicks are likely to let Derrick Rose walk.
When asked if he would field offers from other teams, Teague said he would approach free agency with an open mind. "I have no clue (what I'm going to do). I’ve never been a free agent, I don’t know how it goes. I love it here, but you never know how they feel about me or whatever. I love being in Indiana. It’s great, got a home here. But you never know," added Teague, who made the 2015 NBA All-Star game after helping the Atlanta Hawks claim the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Besides Teague, the likes of Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, Kyle Lowry, Jrue Holiday, George Hill, Derrick Rose, Patty Mills, Shaun Livingston and Darren Collison headline a star-studded group of point guards in the forthcoming 2017 NBA Free Agency class. Though Teague isn't expected to receive a max contract, his consistent production in the 2016-17 season will likely help him land a lucrative, multi-year deal.
“I guess I have to (field offers). I’m unrestricted. I have no choice (but to test the free agent process). I just know when I first got here, they said they wanted me here, not just for a year. I took that to heart. I guess we’ll see," said Teague when addressing his options in 2017 NBA Free Agency.
In his first year as a Pacer, Jeff Teague managed to play all 82 regular-season games for a respectable tally of 15.3 points, 7.8 assists and 4.0 rebounds. During the four-game series against the Cavs, Teague averaged 17.0 points, 6.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds.
