Jennifer Aniston in MTV Awards: TV Sweetheart Becomes Hollywood’s Certified Dirtbag
"Here's to (director) Seth Gordon for letting me be a dirtbag" - Aniston
Jennifer Aniston bags the first ever MTV Award for Best On-Screen Dirtbag for her role in Horrible Bosses as a sleazy man-eating dentist who sexually harasses her assistant (Charlie Day) on a daily basis.
While news came out that Aniston and beau Justin Theroux have parted ways, the sweetheart-turned-dirtbag did not look brokenhearted at the MTV Awards grand event.
The dirtbag award reminded Aniston of her sweetheart girl-next-door role as Rachel Greene in the hit television sitcom Friends. She is thrilled to finally able to break through and play a revolting character for a change.
"I would like to say thank you to the television show Friends for letting me unleash my inner-sweetheart, and here's to (director) Seth Gordon for letting me be a dirtbag," Aniston said.
"I mean, do you know how long I have tried to have somebody let me unleash my on-screen dirtbag? A really long time," playful Aniston told the cheering crowd.
When the film hit the theatres last year, Aniston received mixed reviews.
Washington Post's Peter Suderman thinks Aniston could have done better.
"Miss Aniston plays up her smooth skin and inappropriate allure but seems reticent about the raunchy material. A persistently bug-eyed [Colin] Farrell, sporting a half-bald comb-over that makes him nearly unrecognizable, has no such problem cutting loose." Suderman writes.
There are others, aside from the MTV Awards, who appreciated Aniston's crassy acting.
"The sexual politics of Horrible Bosses are less obnoxiously retrograde than those of, oh, "The Hangover: Part II," partly because of Ms. Aniston's comic skill and partly because they are beside the point," writes New York Times' A.O. Scott.
Other stars nominated for the Dirtbag award included Bryce Dallas Howard, Colin Farrell, and Jon Hamm.
Films for the youth market reigned the crowned winners. Jennifer Lawrence wins the Best Female Performance and Josh Hutcherson gets the male counterpart award. Both talents won for their roles in Hunger Games. The Movie of the Year went to The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1.
